"It Aint What You Do"
by Jon Holiday
"Swing - the 1940s big band genre, isn't necessarily the same as
SWING the life-style (today)." So says Tom Moon in an article for the Knight Rider
New Service, adding that "the suits may be zoot but the music of today's bands
doesn't ring true."
Steve Perry, leader of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, adds "My
personal opinion is that some people have swing and some don't, even with a band like
ours."
Chiming in is Scotty Morris, leader of the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
who
reports that at a recent round table, he. Brian Setzer and 1940s bandleader Artie
Shaw couldn't settle on a definition of SWING. That question was posed in the 1940s, too.
"What is swing?' And the answer is: "If you have to ask, man,
youll never know!"
Morris says, "this music was invented by players who evolved from
early jazz. We all come from different influences. When it comes to laying it down
rhythmically, the new guys know what we're up against. We don't have a drummer like the
legendary Jo Jones. There isn't a rhythm section in any of the bands now who can create
the kind of Ellington so aptly put it: "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got
that swing!"
